Check out our member spotlight this week: Jeremy, aka Flex, has made many improvements to his health and fitness over the past few months. If you bring it up, he’ll probably downplay it; but, there’s been significant improvements made to his health, fitness, and body composition since June of of 2020 – it’s a process, not a quick fix.
From June until December 2020 Jeremy decreased his body fat percentage from 21.5% to 15%, lost 13lbs of body fat, gained 5lbs muscle, and significantly improved his cholesterol levels. While losing weight he didn’t want to lose too much muscle, and wanted to maintain as much strength as possible. Contrary to popular belief we actually added carbohydrates to his diet and decreased his protein intake. He accomplished all of this while eating out for most meals. *Seriously?!* Yes, seriously.
He now has improved body composition, health markers, and his conditioning is markedly improved. He even mentioned having improved energy levels throughout the day and for his workouts compared to previous.
Jeremy has made some awesome strides in his fitness and health since June and wrapped up 2020 checking off some major goals. Should set up 2021 with plenty of new ones to accomplish!
Q: Why, or how, did you start at Benchmark Fitness, Yellowhammer CrossFit?
Between Brandon and Nick, I ran out of decent excuses as to why I couldn’t do CrossFit. I also needed something that would compliment my traditional gym training. I was slacking on my workouts, especially cardio.
Q: What are 3 things are you most proud of accomplishing since starting at Benchmark Fitness?
- Being able to compete and be competitive in the scaled division at Mayhem on the Mountain
- Thanks to the training and diet program, from Benchmark Fitness, I am much healthier than I have been YEARS! That was proven by my yearly physical and blood work. All of my numbers were much improved, especially my cholesterol levels.
- I can finally do an overhead squat with more than the bar!
Q: If you could make a workout, what would it consist of?
It would be something with either running or rowing, pull-ups, push-ups, and GHD’s
Q: What do you like most about Benchmark Fitness home of Yellowhammer CrossFit?
The family atmosphere and the competition. There are a lot of great people here that help me push myself every day.
Q: Favorite place to eat in the Birmingham area? What do you usually order?

Q: Best advice your parents ever gave you?
It’s not advice, but my parents have always been there for me, no matter what, and I really appreciate the support through the years.
Q: What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever had happen to you in public?
I’m sure there have been worse but one of the most recent is when I was introducing one of our higher ups at a large meeting and I completely got his title wrong. He proceeded to correct me in front of everyone.
Q: What’s a pet peeve of yours?
People driving way below the speed limit. Especially when the limit is 45 or less and they are like 10 below.
Q: What would you tell someone who was skeptical about starting at Benchmark?
Give it a month or two. It’s very intimidating at first. If you apply yourself, you can see some real results. I made fun of CrossFit for years and now I’m totally addicted.
